Apply to Tutor at the Hospital
Applications are open for returning hospital tutors. Subscribe to our email list to get updates for when applications open for new hospital tutors in mid-summer.
The hospital applications are in two waves. Returning OEC hospital tutors from the winter semester should have received the application already from an email sent by oec.hospital@umich.edu. Please complete this application by May 1st at 11:59 pm.
If you are a returning hospital tutor and have not received this application (ie: because of a study abroad or other circumstance) please email oec.hospital@umich.edu ASAP, so we can send it to you.
Applications for new hospital tutors will be released mid-summer. After applications are reviewed, selected candidates will be contacted for virtual interviews prior to receiving a hospital placement. Please direct any questions to oec.hospital@umich.edu.
As well, we have been developing virtual tutoring options. This week, the UM hospital asked if we could provide a list of students willing to volunteer as virtual tutors because they have been receiving many requests from faculty, staff, and patients about virtual tutoring. As such, please fill out this form by April 26th at 12 pm to indicate your interest as a potential virtual tutor (Zoom, BlueJeans, etc.).
ATTENTION: This clearance process is SEPARATE from the hospital volunteer services.
If you are planning to volunteer in the hospital in another capacity outside of OEC tutoring, you must follow the procedures of the Michigan Medicine Volunteer Services.
1. Fill out application (Returning and New Tutors)
New Applicant Info:
1. All OEC hospital tutors must have tutored at a
community site for at least one semester in order
to be considered
2. You must also be able to attend an orientation.
3. You must commit the required amount of time to
the hospital.
4. Proof of flu vaccination and TB test are required.
If not completed beforehand the hospital will
provide you with one before you begin tutoring.
2. Complete Interview (New Tutors)
Interviews will be selected based on:
1. Past tutoring at OEC sites
2. Active Membership in OEC
3. Application Responses
We will contact you to set up an interview.

1. First semester freshman are REQUIRED to tutor at
a community center for a semester before
transferring to the hospital
2. You must also be able to attend an orientation
(you will commit to a day/time that day, fill out
paperwork, and tour the center).
3. You must commit the required amount of time to
the community center.
2. Complete an Orientation
Orientation Info:
1. The community site will contact you for a time for
an orientation. These are individual and you may
or may not be with other tutors during your
orientation
2. If you need to bring forms with you the center will
provide them or email you. Don't forget your
driver's license.
